Experimentation time today. After the second strip I decided to try and do the backgrounds and environment as CGI in order to save some drawing and shading time. This is the first attempt to use the CGI backgrounds. It's not quite finished yet, and I maybe need to work a bit on the placement of objects. The big problem with the angle I used is that the cash register in the foreground looks HUGE compared to everything else. A quick word on how I put this strip together then. I built the whole shop in a 3D package called Wings3D. I positioned the camera in the pose you see, using stick skeletons as drawing references. Using the screen as reference, I then drew the two character skeletons (there was actually a third character in the background but he made the frame too busy) then drew the characters around them. I then scanned the drawings in, cleaned and coloured, then used PSP to slap them into the picture. A little bit of jiggling around and the strip doesn't look too bad. What with all the jiggling and building of the shop scene, I actually had very little drawing time, hence the cut and paste look of the strip, but once I get the hang of positioning the viewpoint in Wings, some more dynamic strips might be coming your way. Let me know what you think through the comic forum. A worthy mention this week to the dearly departed webcomics The Rules and Framed!!. These are two damn good comics (although Framed can go off on some seriously weird tangents) with fantastic writing. The Rules is a very good comic to read if you are just starting out as a comic artist, since Norman (the writer/artist) goes into a lot of detail about the learning curve. It's just a shame that due to personal circumstances the authors of both comics now do not have the time to draw any more. Hats off to you guys for some damn entertaining comics though. Also, check out the Framed!!! artist's better half's comic, Eat The Roses, too. It too has sadly stopped updating, but the artist is still hanging around the internet I hear... Until next week, comic lovers. |
