12 September 2006
041 - In memoriam

Selezen12 September 2006

I was at work. I was sitting writing some program or other, and someone came into the office and said that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Centre.

Disbelief. Shock. Wonderment. Was the World Trade Centre that tall building in New York? The square one with the spike on top? I'd seen it on the titles and link clips in Friends and in the trailer for Spiderman.

I went to the canteen, through the door at the back of the office. The television was turned up, and there it was: the square one with the spike on top. With smoke pouring out of it.

I stood, mouth agape, listening to the BBC news reporter talking about it. Then, as I watched, the unthinkable happened.

A second plane slammed into the other tower.

Thus began the day that changed the world.

American Airlines Flight 11.
United Airlines Flight 175.
American Airlines Flight 77.
United Airlines Flight 93.
The staff and visitors of the World Trade Centre.
The brave men and women of the FDNY and NYPD.
And all others who lost their lives, both during and since that terrible day, due to global terrorism.

To them, this is my small tribute, 5 years on.
